1. Creating an uneven
wall
In this tutorial I'll show you how to create a simple but good looking
rock-wall. First of all you create some 7 or 9 sided brushes and
put them together to an uneven wall. Be sure that then brushes hit
at two points in order to prevent holes when you're beginning with
the vertex-manipulation. If a brush doesn't fit at once you can
use the drag edges function to bring it in the right position but
don't make them sloping at this time. You also will notice that
|
|
the greater part of the brushes
are standing out of the borders of your map. Since they're
not important for your rock-wall you can cut them off. So
your brushes will have to faces on is a straight line where
they hit the border of the map (the sky brush) and the other
are more realistic and uneven one. The last step of this small
part is to choose the right height of your rocks (you could
also do this step at the beginning)

2. Basic vertex
manipulation
Now we come to more interesting part. Simply select a brush and
play a little with the drag edges function to make the brush a little
bit overhanging or sloping (but only a little !!). Then
|
|
select the brush who's next to
the first one and make it similar to your first one, the most
important thing is that the edges of the two brushes must
hit themselves at the same point. After repeating this step
with all the brushes you should step over to the drag vertices
function in order to manipulate the brushes a little more.
After this two steps your wall should look like in the picture
on the left. But wait this doesn't look very realistic, so
check a last time if the brush edges really meet them self
and hide over to the next steps.

3. More manipulation
by using the cutting function
After creating this basic (but not so good) looking rock-wall, we
now come to the more interesting manipulation techniques. As you
can see all the brushes meet at the same height but that's not very
realistic. One possible way to make the brushes more realistic is
to the top
of the brushes to a pointed or round form. So select the left (or
the right) of two meeting brushes and change your main window to
the XZ or YZ view (You have to see the brush from
|
|
|
|
|
the front). Now simply cut the edge which meets
the other brush and then repeat this step also with other
one. If you find the brushes now meet too pointed you have
the possibility to make the rest of the top more round by
doing some additional flat cuts. After this steps your rock-wall
should be look much more realistic. If this isn't enough for
you then jump over to the next step to give your wall some
more details.

4. More details
You also can use the cutting function to give your rocks some more
details (= to make them more like polygons). This sounds more difficult
then it is. Just select the brush change your XY-view to a XZ or
YZ-view (you must see the brush from the side) and cut either the
top or the bottom of it.
5. Final look
After all these steps your rocks should look like on the picture.
For the one of you who isn't this enough should check out this additional
tutorial for more details for a rock wall.
